She had worked on the project. = habia trabajado en el proyecto (ya esta completo) She had been working on the project for three months when the client cancelled.

sujeto + had been + verbo con -ing

    TipoEstructuraEjemplo
Afirmativohad been + -ingWe had been waiting for two hours.
Negativohad not been + -ingHe hadn't been sleeping well.
InterrogativoHad + sujeto + been + -ingHad they been working on this long?

Cuando usar el past perfect continuous

I had been working at that company for five years when they offered me the promotion. She had been studying English for two years before she got the job. They had been negotiating the contract for weeks before they finally signed.

He had been managing the team since 2020 when the restructure happened. We had been using that software for years before we switched.

Her eyes were red because she had been crying. He was exhausted because he had been traveling all day. The team was demotivated because they had been working overtime for weeks.

    3. Acciones repetidas hasta un punto pasado

The client had been complaining about the service for months before they finally left. We had been asking for resources since the beginning of the project.

Past perfect continuous vs past perfect simple

    Past perfect simplePast perfect continuous
    FocoAccion completadaProceso, duracion
ResultadoEl resultado finalLa actividad en curso
EjemploShe had written the report. She had been writing the report for hours.
¿Termino?

When I arrived, he had read the document. = ya lo habia leido (accion completa) When I arrived, he had been reading the document for an hour. = llevaba una hora leyendolo

The team had finished the project by Friday. = completado, terminado The team had been working on the project for months. = proceso, duracion, no necesariamente terminado

Verbos como know, believe, understand, love, hate, own casi siempre van en past perfect simple:

Incorrecto: I had been knowing the answer. Correcto: I had known the answer.

Palabras clave del past perfect continuous

    PalabraEjemplo
forI had been working there for two years.
sinceShe had been leading the team since January.
all day / all morningThey had been negotiating all day.
beforeBefore the meeting, I had been preparing notes for an hour.
whenI was exhausted when I arrived - I had been traveling since 5 AM.
by the timeBy the time they called, I had been waiting for 45 minutes.

    Errores comunes

Error 1: Confundir con present perfect continuous

Present perfect continuous: I have been working here for two years. = sigo trabajando aca, relevante para el presente. Past perfect continuous: I had been working there for two years when I got promoted. = duracion hasta un punto pasado.

Error 2: Usar "have been" en vez de "had been"

Incorrecto: When she arrived, we have been waiting for an hour. Correcto: When she arrived, we had been waiting for an hour.

She had been writing the proposal. = enfasis en el proceso She had written the proposal. = enfasis en que estaba lista

By Monday, the team had been finishing the project. - incorrecto (by Monday implica que ya termino) By Monday, the team had finished the project. - correcto
